AMAZING PRODUCTION – make sure you attend this show!

Hamlet in a mere 90 minutes? Is it possible? YES – and this is a production you don’t want to miss!!!

The entire concept of the post-apocalyptic world of Denmark within the framework of a graphic novel was a stunning slant on the classic play. The sound design and the original music was haunting and perfect to underscore the piece, and the the gorgeous artwork/ animation/ graphic design really brought the world to life to beautiful effect, especially coupled with the costume design that was both the destroyed future with historical elements of the past. The production designers have done such a beautiful job – by including only the props that are necessary to support the story, and the lighting design that reinforced the mood of each scene.

And what a cast! Every member of this ensemble is so strong in their multiple roles! Polonius’ portrayal (not of the doddering old man, as most productions show him to be) was so refreshing and absolutely hilarious when the moment called for it. Ophelia’s performance was so raw and heartbreakingly fragile, and seeing Claudius so honestly concerned made him more human than I have ever seen his character on stage. The way that Gertrude truly cared for those around her- her son, both husbands, Polonius, Ophelia- she really brought her struggles and concern to life, as mother, wife, and Queen. Horatio, with both passion and reason, plays out the production as a wonderful witness and commentator on events for the audience to connect with. The female take on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern was played out so well – I loved that choice! Every role those ladies took on was given its own life and seemed like an entirely different actress was portraying each role, especially the fervent and passionate Laertes. What an experience HAMLET MAX was to attend!

I really love the choices that were made for this production of Hamlet. Using voice over and projection as an opportunity to underscore Hamlet’s soliloquies was so very powerful. The entire show kept me on the edge of my seat – and I could feel that the rest of the audience was right there with me and loved it just as much. On top of that, I have no idea how they were able to cut Shakespeare down to a mere ninety minutes and keep all of the heart of the piece, but the artists of HAMLET MAX have done so so very successfully!

I sincerely hope that this production continues to perform after the Fringe ends – I would love to see it again! This is a show you don’t want to miss – get your tickets now!
