GEORGE M COHAN TONIGHT, was written by Chip Deffaa, (once NY Post Theatre critic and ghost writer to many autobiographies including David Cassidy!) back in 2005 and was a hit off-Broadway with Jon Peterson as Cohan back in 2006.
This 90 min show is set in an abandoned Vaudeville House where Cohan’s ghost appears and tells you his story; of how he went from child star to inventing the musical as we know it today, composing over 50 musicals and plays, as well as his hit songs, “Over There”, “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, “Give My Regards to Broadway” and about 24 more in this high energy performance… The New York Times raved about this show at its New York premier, calling it “Endlessly Euphoric”. It also said, “Mr. Peterson…easily erases memories of both [Cagney and Joel Grey] early on as he strides across the seemingly small Irish Rep stage as if it were Radio City Music Hall. And the man can dance: you won’t see a buck-and-wing like this on too many stages any more.”
The show played at the Irish Rep Theatre and Jon was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Solo Performance. (Anthony Sher won -No, I don’t understand either…)
