In Eddie Antar’s play The Navigator down-on-his-luck Dave is directionless. He has been out of work for months, his wife is ready to give up on their marriage, and he doesn’t know where his life is going. Fortunately for Dave, his GPS does. After delivering some navigational advice that ends up saving Dave’s life, the GPS begins providing Dave with semi-cryptic life advice. He soon discovers that his omniscient GPS can guide him through a life free of sadness and surprise. The play rides smooth for most of its duration, simultaneously fast, funny, and sensitive. First let me go on record by saying that I do not like the voice on my navigation system, so it is saying something when I which I can dub Kelly Anne's voice in my system. This production was awesome! From concept to cast. No wonder they are multi-award winners. That being said, what I took from this piece is more of a social statement on us human beings, and we really do not need as much help with life as we thing. Don't get me wrong, I would like the "pick 6" numbers too, but one thing that I am not willing to give up, is the joy on gamble taking from the gut that pays off. The Navigator was truly a pleasure to see. Honestly, I have no idea where to start my review. Productions like this one are the reason that I love theater and the people that dedicate their lives to it. There is not a single person that I think doesn't deserve some recognition on this piece. When I first walked into the theater, I was in awe with how beautiful the theater (Actor's Company) was. To be frank, I spent a good five minutes trying to nonchalantly figure out where the sound booth was because it was hidden very well. The set was simple. A couple boxes, flats, chairs, and a crafted steering wheel was all they used and it was all that was needed! Sound Design? HOLY HELL. Props to the actors and the technical staff for this! This play is a great example of classically cathartic theatre using a creative and modern device to explore fundamental truths about fear, hope and what it is to be a human being. Curtain up, it immediately transports the audience into the emotional turmoil of the main character played a brilliant Joe Francini (nominated Drama Desk award for the role) who compels us from the moment the play begins. There is a great mystery as to why he is so devastated but this unveils in one of the most unusual (and fantastical) relationships I've ever seen on stage. While the story has extremely bizarre elements, the actors' nuanced performances maintain an emotional reality that resonates on a primal and universal level.
