My overall impression
Oh, Bronies, don’t you ever change! This is a wonderfully enjoyable musical delving into the recent emergence of ‘Bronies’, dudes who love the (new) animated series, My Little Ponies.
The show reads (watches) like an after school special about friendship, love and acceptance, but with a tongue-in-cheek, adult approach resulting in some very funny (and not safe for children) moments.
The lyrics are catchy and upbeat, and the four women playing the ponies do excellent job of selling their peppy, super positive characters. The rest of the cast also does a great job, and I loved Joe Greene (who turns out is also the composer) in his supporting role as the comic book store owner.
I did, however, have two issues with the production. The first were the bullies that protagonist has to deal with repeatedly, which came across as painfully cliche in their actions and dialogue. The second was the blooming romance between two of the men in the show, which was awkward and not believable.
That said, neither of those issues were enough to dampen my overall enjoyment of Bronies: The Musical and I would highly recommend everyone go check out one of the remaining performances. This is exactly the sort of show that the Fringe was made for, and hopefully it will continue to have a life beyond it.
