My overall impression

If you love 1950s sci-fi B-movies, this musical is for you. If you hate 1950s sci-fi B-movies, this musical is for you. If you’re sick of zombies, this musical is definitely for you. And if you love pure entertainment, then this musical is most definitely for you.

James Valcq’s musical is a wonderfully charming parody of 1950s sci-fi B-movies which takes place in the Milwaukee Space Center. There’s an all-female alien invasion led by Zombina (Alison England) who have come to earth to “zombify” Earth-men for procreative purposes. While employing the best elements of both the genre and musical theatre, it also is a hilarious political satire.

Director Dan Spurgeon’s love of the genre is evident in his clear, sharp and fast-paced direction. There is never a dull moment. His fantastic ensemble plays every nuance of their delightful characteristics and superb comedic timing. Most notably is Lara Fisher as the secretary Charlie – even when she’s just in the background you can’t stop watching her reactions. And of course there’s Alison England’s hysterical Zombina – that role was written to steal the show, which she does with effortless aplomb.

Set design by Tommi Stugart, Angel Madrid and Jason Thomas is exciting, intricate yet simple, inventive, playful, and completely transforms the small stage. They’ve taken the challenge and fun of this musical and have run with it.

It would be un-American to miss this show.
