My overall impression
This play is not your usual “production”. First and foremost, they do not use a traditional stage. Please don’t let that scare you! Let it entice you into a new and “real” live “street” play. It seemed a bit odd to me at first to stand (or sit on a bench if you like) and watch a performance, but within just a few minutes of this play starting, I was engrossed. The female “Sue” played by Caitlin Carleton opens the show by yelling at her partner “Tom” and thus begins their “conversation”.I apologize for the over use of quotation marks, but I am left with no choice! I don t want to give anything away, but I do want to commend the actors. “Tom” is played by the ever enigmatic Christian Calloway. He is most recognized as being “I am Hollywood Homeless.” So far his career as Hollywood’s premier and ONLY true homeless actor has been nothing short of stellar. I was intrigued to see him on stage in his element as it were, and I was NOT disappointed! Caitlin, who I have not previously seen was refreshing yet deep. She had a great stage presence and seemed to hold up well with the seasoned acting veteran. Caitlin and Christian have an amazing, and deep connection as Tom and Sue. Their conversation is as natural as two people sitting at the dinner table. Yet, you are made aware that there is something visceral going on here relatively quickly. Each actor gives you their story and what has brought them to their disparity, and within that lies the story of the play. They begin by engaging you in subtle “homeless” but everyday humor. I quickly began laughing with them, at them, and by the end, had felt my heart and mind had run the gamut of human emotions. I was engrossed in their stories, in THE story, and was almost sad when it ended. Travis (the director) whom I met after, did SUCH a brilliant job with such an unusual production. They were able to take the outside environment and use it to their advantage.
I highly recommend you visit this show. What I truly appreciated was they do not sell tickets. They ask for cash donations and or new socks to donate to the homeless through something called the “B-Love Foundation.”
Folks… Step out of the cardboard box and onto the corner of Greenacres St. And Santa Monica Blvd. Take a chance on this unusual production. One of the most refreshing “plays” I have seen in awhile!! You will NOT be disappointed!!
