I loved the acting! Marcelina shines as an enthusiastic murder fan and Jonathan is solid as her curmudgeon of a co-host. I was taken aback and thoroughly floored when Marcelina put on her “podcaster voice,” which shows off her range as a stellar voiceover artist and performer. And I liked how tight the script is and how well-paced the plot of the musical moved.
What I didn't like
I would’ve liked to see more of the “other character” throughout the show. And call-and-response of some sort would work well for a show like this. Especially since it’s about a pair of podcasters who are “live-streaming” their pod, call-and-response with us as the audience would be a fun way to mimic podcasters or streamers interacting or conversing with their audience in real time.
My overall impression
Murder Podcast: The Musical is a marvelously delightful show! The juxtaposition of a whimsical, funny musical about murders and true crime works as Marcelina and Johnathan sing, spin, and slash their ways into our hearts. I was impressed by how well these two work together on stage, displaying so much earnest chemistry and collaborative creativity. This show is a crowd-pleaser and everyone at Fringe should know it!
