ABBY NORMAL: A Musical about epilepsy

Abby Normal is an original musical that puts epilepsy, one of the most common, least funded, least researched and most stigmatized brain disorders in the world center stage. Seizure is a ruthless character who believes this is his story. Abby disagrees. We watch everything she took for granted stripped away as she battles to find her new normal, transforming an invisible struggle into theatrical magic.
This is a story about anyone who has ever loved a child, felt unseen, or looked for meaning in a world that hands you something you didn’t ask for and don’t want. Abby sings her heart out and our audience responded with a standing ovation at our staged reading.

“Epilepsy affects 3.4 million Americans. People with epilepsy don’t talk about it because it is safer not to. The stigma is still that profound. My granddaughter Lucia has intractable epilepsy. I wrote this musical because out of my own powerlessness against a brain disorder that as of this date has no cure, art was the only answer I had. When someone in an audience sees themselves represented on a stage for the first time, and others see them as well, then Abby Normal is doing her job. "
