About the Project
Josiah Henson is known as Uncle Tom, a name that is slanderous in the black community. His life story was anything but. Born enslaved in Maryland. Sold and separated from his entire family before the age of 5. Josiah overcame. He kept hope. He became a preacher. He learned to read and write. He wrote books. He met the Queen. He spoke in the white house. He returned to the deep south to free dozens using the underground railroad. He grew into an amazing man. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book about him, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which became the reason for the start of the Civil War. This dramatic show will tell his story, and how the phrase ’Uncle Tom," as we know it, came to be.
