The Terrible Somnambulists

A lighthearted, frivolous romp through…existential terror. A Brechtian homage to Godot. The writing is top-notch: this is probably the smartest play at Fringe this year. Go. You’ll either be hurt or healed. White and Black stand under a lamppost in the middle of nothingness. Why are they there? How did they get there? What is out there? Can they leave? The play asks more questions than it answers. Words that popped to mind include fear, absurd, poetry, memory, madness, existential, religion, Godot, Brecht, vocabulary, existentialism, humor, longing, funny, self-referential, cruel, gripping, mesmerizing, nihilistic, Sartrian, philosophy, and hopeless. Very cool show to see. Truly two men (good acting!), lit by just a lamppost, while we watch them explore depths of mind and wonder where these two men come from, are going, and who they are now. Just on the cusp of knowing. Both with fears and secrets and frustrations. But with plenty going on to keep your attention. ... full review

I loved all of the absurdist existentialism this play is dealing with! When the performance started with no talking for the first 5 minutes or so, I was almost ready for the entire show to be speechless, but I also loved hearing everything both characters had to say. It definitely reminded me of Beckett in all the best ways!... full review

It was completely engaging and created such a rich, unsettling environment from the start. A two hander with crackling chemistry between characters that never rely on tired tropes: each actor goes through various emotions and argues multiple points of view with ease. Like old friends, they comfortably argue, and agree, and then go back to arguing. Their movements in the small space were enough to keep us engaged but never too much to be distracting, which helped me really focus on their dialogue and the story. ... full review
