My overall impression
When you hear this show includes drag and you see the wig, the mustache, the loud flowered shirt, you worry Radical Acts with RAMÓN might lean on stereotypes, turning RAMÓN into a caricature of a Latin man. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. The magic of RAMÓN is Ruby Marez’ tender handling of a real person, or as it were, persona. From the moment RAMÓN tumbles on stage, we feel his heart. Ruby creates something truly special with her character RAMÓN. And it isn’t like the show isn’t fun! It’s wildly hilarious! There’s dress-up, there’s dancing, there’s the entire theatre calling a California Senator’s office. The entire time, Ruby as RAMÓN maintains a constant connection with the audience and deftly feels out where we all need to be taken moment to moment.
This show is so brilliantly constructed it took me a few days to connect the dots. Slowly it dawned on me that what on the surface appeared to be simply carefree fun (with a good hearty dose of education), was actually an intentional subconscious awakening. By the time the show comes to end, we all become RAMÓN. In one fell swoop of an hour, Ruby reminds us how easy it is to come together and stand up for each other in a world that fights to keep us apart.
