What I liked

I liked the brilliant storytelling in this show and the performers way of setting context through the backdrop of world events that informed the dominant cultures thoughts and ideas. The artist embodies the character of his mother with clarity and bravery and paints a picture of a deeply flawed, stubborn, bad politics having, ignorant woman who is also lovable, generous and wise-someone who could be easy to hate but as life and motherhood would have it – delivers to us all the moment of deep perplexing thought and clear human realization as she recognizes and sees her child beyond the limitations of gender identity, “it’s confusing because your still the same person….”

What I didn't like

I would like to see the actor take their time with each vignette and each transition which was often shown through movement on stage from one space to another. I want to see the movement slower and more deliberate to give time for reflection and introspection on some of the zingers. The content in this show is rich the writing evokes so much emotion, I want to see the actor lean into the dialogue and sink more deeply into the characters through allowing us to hang in the uncomfortableness and awkwardness as well as the tender sweet moments.

My overall impression

A Man Called Mommy delivered a poignant and humorous message about family, faith and radical love through the lens of a white queer trans man, his Black children and his conservative Trump supporting mother. The one man show confronts identity politics, prejudice and ignorance with witty and clever portrayals of loved ones – mom, siblings, children and himself as they grapple with what it means to really embody and embrace the teachings of Jesus-love everyone.
