I liked what the team decided to keep and/or merge to make the runtime and cast fit just about everything I know and love from the film. Again, great cast, immersion, tech, choreo, costumes/wigs, humor – all very on point.
What I didn't like
Found myself missing some of the original lines and line readings and even songs from the movie, and thought it was interesting when direct line reads juxtaposed with new takes and interpretations. Still, the show is its own thing beyond just a tribute, and I can see it having its own cult following in no time.
My overall impression
“What if Wet Hot American Summer” was “Rock of Ages?” You get a much, much funnier Rock of Ages. I came to this show as a mega-fan of the movie, and was not disappointed. I’m not big on jukebox musicals, but this totally show works. Fabulously talented cast, shout out to the producers and the director/choreographer. From a technical standpoint, the room was vibrant and immersed me from start to finish. Great costumes and wigs that looked straight out of the movie. I talked to folks after who had not seen the movie, and they loved the show too, which I think is a great sign. This could be a hit.
