Anyone who has ever survived a corporate disrespect or the absurdity of bureaucracy will find something terrifyingly familiar in Antoine Lee’s new solo show, Clocked In. Making its Washington, D.C. premiere on March 8, the solo cabaret experience forces audiences to step into the role of “employees” attending a mandatory professional development training. Leading the session? Lee himself, playing a charismatic but completely unhinged department manager.
Instead of just sitting in the dark and watching another musical theatre professional narrate a predictable biography interspersed with their favorite audition material the audience is the costar of this show. Antoine dives headfirst into the absurdity of corporate culture, using original music workplace.
Lee, a AEA union performer and professionally trained dancer with 15 years under his belt, anchors the production in his experiences working everywhere from factories, Kpop music videos, Theatres, and of course offices.. Clocked In marks a deliberate pivot toward more interactive storytelling for the artist, leaning heavily on his background in dance, vocal performance, and sharp comedic timing to keep his new “employees” on their toes.
“We’ve all had to perform at work in some way,” says Lee. “Clocked In isn’t just a show; it’s an experience that flips the script. It asks what happens when we examine the corporate mask we wear.” By blending stylized corporate aesthetics with emotionally charged musical numbers, the show ultimately challenges attendees to look at their own relationship with productivity and authenticity.
