The pacing of this comedic story with heart was perfect and a credit to the writer/actor Derek Hereen. The lighting design was perfect and helped the one-man show to seem perfectly populated with various characters and settings.
I haven’t laughed this much in the theater in years. The jokes were well crafted.
What I didn't like
Honestly, I am at a loss to find any fault in the play. The only point I had a question was the first flashback to the father and child with the toy scene. I wasn’t sure if that was present day or part of the origin of Stan’s character, but it honestly works both ways.
My overall impression
“I SUCK” is a comedy with well crafted jokes and heart. The unique characters of the show are all expertly played by writer and star Derek Hereen. My entire family was impressed with his ability to bring life – and different styles of humor and pathos – to such a variety of intertwined characters. He will be an actor and writer to watch for in future endeavors.
Praise should be give to both the Director for helping Mr. Hereen find that effective balance of comedic timing and storytelling at a perfect pace and to the lighting team to adding an integral design element to the nearly bare staging.
