i suck: a vampire comedy
CHARLES ELDRIDGE certified reviewer June 20, 2026
“I SUCK” is a comedy with well crafted jokes and heart. The unique characters of the show are all expertly played by writer and star Derek Hereen. My entire family was impressed with his ability to bring life - and different styles of humor and pathos - to such a variety of intertwined characters. He will be an actor and writer to watch for in future endeavors. Praise should be give to both the Director for helping Mr. Hereen find that effective balance of comedic timing and storytelling at a perfect pace and to the lighting team to adding an integral design element to the nearly bare staging. I highly recommend this show. ... full review

The show was very well done. The pacing, direction, and use of the lights made it easy to follow the character/period changes without being too much. This enabled the performance to be the focus. The different voices, coupled with the change in Derek's posture/position were very effective.... full review

Derek Heeren’s I SUCK brings life to the stage—pretty good for the undead! The characters are inspired, and he inhabits them perfectly. Yes, it’s funny, but it is also poignant. If you’ve felt stuck like Stan, I SUCK just might help you get unstuck. If you’re completely happy with your life, well, you will be even happier watching this play!... full review

I had a fantastic time at I Suck - A Vampire Comedy. The concept was original, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt. The performer carried the entire production with incredible energy, seamlessly switching between humor, vulnerability, and absurdity. What could have been a simple comedy became a clever exploration of loneliness, purpose, and the challenges of existing for centuries when you're stuck in a rut. The writing was sharp, witty, and full of unexpected laughs, while the character felt relatable despite being, well, a vampire. The performer’s timing and stage presence kept the audience engaged from beginning to end. I found myself laughing one moment and genuinely empathizing with the character the next.... full review

Derek’s “Stan” does NOT, in fact, suck, as both tortured subject and unwitting guide in a journey that traverses the terrestrial, the celestial, and the infernal in pursuit of the answer to that most ancient question: “What’s it all about?” The writing is at turns hilarious and heartfelt, with Derek Heeren showing impressive range and energy as he inhabits multiple characters throughout the performance. The magic of it all is, of course, the existential itch needing to be scratched at the center of all the supernatural quirkiness. A really delightful time at the theater.... full review
