Her voice is fabulous and, like the best solo shows, she doesn’t let herself off the hook, offering real insights on what she learns from her challenges and the passage of time. She’s a no b.s. person in her show, and bravely shares some difficult truths and insights with great self-awareness. I also appreciated the context she shared of how her songs fit into their original shows as well as her own story.
I LOVE that at the end of the show, she does something on stage that’s clearly out of her comfort zone and risky, demonstrating a skill that’s new to her, because in all other ways she’s such a confident, accomplished pro. A truly exciting experience of live theatre. Brava!
What I didn't like
I was a little put off by the art of the show (program, ads). I get what they were going for, but it doesn’t conveys the depths on display or the full range of the show, and they don’t tap into Karen’s lovable REALNESS as a performer. I wondered if the cover art had been designed by AI. If not, apologies to the human artist.
My overall impression
Karen is a diva with vulnerability. In her show, she displays a powerful set of pipes that can also convey new nuance and emotion of many beloved Broadway tunes, a story full of surprises—happy and sad—and a warm personality that will have you wanting to dish with her after the show.
