About the Project

PLAY is not a play. It is play.

What if 12 people got together and played? No actors. No audience. No costumes. No stakes. Just play. For its own sake.

PLAY invites 12 “guests” at a time into the space, where a circle of chairs awaits. Simple games are introduced. What will happen? PLAY is a radical, simple and silent experience, guests from 8 to 80, join together to play.

The games are modeled from the games of social worker Neva Boyd and inspired by the work of Psychologists Dr. Stuart Brown and Dr. Peter Gray. Play has affect on our psychological health, ability to empathize and build trust, as well as inspire creativity – and yet in a technological world where the ends seem to always justify the means, we are desperately in need of opportunities for full engagement in the safe, collaborative and creative focus of play.

According to Dr. Gray, play is…

1. Self-chosen and self-directed

2. Intrinsically motivated

3. Structured or ordered based on rules in the player’s mind.

4. Imaginative

5. A playful state of mind – the player in very engaged, alert, mentally active, and focused on the activity, but is not stressed about the activity.
