What I didn't like
For every winner, there are dozens of heartbreaking snubs. Because the Community Awards rely on a voting system tied to how many shows you saw or reviewed, some smaller, niche, or self-funded productions feel the awards can inadvertently turn into a popularity contest or favor larger, well-connected production houses.
My overall impression
Winning or even being nominated for a Community Award (affectionately called “The Freaks”) or a Discover Fringe Award can completely alter an indie show’s trajectory. Reviewers love seeing underdogs get massive recognition, monetary prizes, or extensions to places like the SoHo Playhouse in New York or the Adelaide Fringe in Australia.
