I loved the performers, how brave they are. I liked the easy-silly-props aesthetic of just-putting-on-a-show-with-what was at hand. The music and rhyming were magnificent. The Surprises were many and humorous. There were physical bits that were played flawlessly, almost like the Marx Brothers. It was Dada and absurdist and wild. The Queen and the Executioner had wonderful comic timing. The rest of the cast was wonderful too.
What I didn't like
I am a stickler for being perfectly off book. The lead actor flubbed and made announcements of the flubs. I think just mowing past the flubs is the better way to go. The ending left me wondering if the general theme is—-All power corrupts…since the one who eventually took over ended up being as clueless as the one that was replaced. It was good to see the wretched queen go down. But I wondered if it would be more effective if we also saw a little more clearly what happens when the disempowered come up. But the ride, no matter what, was very fun.
My overall impression
