The writing, the humor and the cast. I really liked how absurd it was!
What I didn't like
I must have missed the tag when I was reading about the show as an interactive show, which is totally fine and I don’t mind those shows. However, when the cast started cueing the audience to respond or engage back (personally and the vibe I got from the audience I was with) were confused on how, what, and when we should engage back. For me, that confusion took me out of the world a little since now I was focusing on what I needed to do. Perhaps at the start of the play or even the ticket taker could remind audiences. There are also the 3 attendant characters in the show, perhaps they could have cue cards or set the audience up more.
There were some dropped lines (since other reviewers pointed this out), but ya know, the actors played it off and the piece is so absurd, self-aware and forth wall breaking that it didn’t bother me since when it happened it was played off well/in world of the play.
My overall impression
“Gilded Rage” is probably the most absurd piece of theater that I have seen in a long time! It was both clever and humorous as well as unafraid to poke fun at elites or power structures. Cast was very talented, had solid comedic timing, charming and great characters. The writing was smart/clever. I was slightly confused at times (mostly due to not knowing when I needed to engage back as an audience member) but I definitely enjoyed myself, had a lot of fun and laughs. It was a wild and an absurd experience from start to finish! Glad I saw it!
