The writing and acting is very realistic. At one point in the show, I felt like I should not be watching this because these two characters, Jason and Ximena are having an extremely personal and hard conversation with each other. I forgot I was in a room with 40 other people. It truly felt like I was a fly on the wall witnessing something I shouldn’t. That is a testament to the incredible naturalistic acting from
Ryan Jaske and Arianna Williams, and excellent writing from Adriana Martinez Barron.
Ryan Jaske perfectly balances “Caring Patient Fiancé” and the “Fed up Fiancé”. When arguing, the outbursts are filled with love, not anger, and thats a hard thing to show, and he does it masterfully.
Adriana does an incredible job taking a character with many flaws, and making you understand why she is the way she is. You go from screaming internally and banging your head, to actually feeling for and understanding her. Excellent work.
What I didn't like
SPOILERALERT: The play crescendos and is resolved with the couple Jason and Ximena making amends and finally coming to terms with the fact that Jason is all Ximena needs, her new family with him. The lights go down with this beautiful tableau of the two on the couch. And I thought that was a perfect ending! But then the play goes on for three more scene in what feels more like an epilogue. The end of the show was still nice, showing the power of forgiveness and self reflection, but I feel like the scene on the couch made a bigger impact for the ending.
My overall impression
This show is hard to look away from. Every second something on that stage is happening and it’s all because of the outstanding cast and extremely realistic and personal writing. The characters are very well fleshed out and even the ones that you don’t agree with, you can still understand. The drama is only heightened by the amazing comedic moments.
