The script is clever and cheeky (reminiscent of Mission to Zyxx at times), with a lot of laughs and fun sci-fi silliness. The worldbuilding is surprisingly deep given how accessible it is. Jenni Chiaramonte has done wonderful work crafting a fresh and bright sci-fi setting that I want to keep living in.
The main trio reminded me of the K-Pop Demon Hunters and/or Charlie’s Angels, and they have a really fun dynamic together. (Nina Rancel’s Lyra constantly getting the zoomies like the pitbull I sit for made me laugh and smile every time! As did Cassi knowing exactly what was needed to pull her out of it.) Alex Sarno’s turn as the level-headed Cassi kept the team and the plot grounded and moving along. (What can I say? The Nerdy One is always going to be my favorite.) Cynthia Dane is a delight as Anais, and probably the best representative of humanity we could have sent to make first contact.
I hope this is just the beginning for the Doom Girls. Earth needs them! (And we need an album or an EP!)
What I didn't like
I think the stakes and tension could be upped by giving the villain a bit more to (actually) say and a more personal tie to the Doom Girls. The bit of him only saying “bullshit” is funny, but I would have loved a strong narrative-emotional reason to want him to go down. (I had to rely on external knowledge of what IRL podcast bros have said.) I would have liked to have heard more music, and for music to have been more central to the plot. The pieces are all there, especially with Earth being a better planet for musicians and their human ally being a hippie!
My overall impression
Three intrepid secret agents learn to love Earth in this quirky, campy, intergalactic quest!
