the performances were sooooooooo great. highlights included brennan murray as benji, jennifer lynn warren as deb, evan petrino as marcus, austin buchner as gavin, and particularly will rosen as eli, the boy who goes missing. rosen has a monologue early in the show that shattered my heart into a million billion pieces. but everyone was fantastic even those not mentioned. so many times when i see a show in la, the performances let me down. not the case here. the director clearly knows how to work with actors and it shows.
What I didn't like
maybe it was just me but I occasionally had a diffult time discerning between past and present. it wasn’t a huge issue – i figured it out – just took me longer sometimes than maybe i wanted. but again that could just be a me thing.
My overall impression
really emotionally charged portrait of small town life and the people who actually make up a community. loved the queer nature of the piece and really liked how the queerness wasn’t the driving plot point. always enjoy some daniel johnston playing in a show, and the playwright also played the sheriff and seeing him wear so many hats, for a young playwright and creator, was really inspiring.
