What I liked

As a playwright, Brewton understands how to make us care about characters in a very short amount of time. From the moment the two leads share their first scene, the chemistry is there, and you know you’re in safe hands. As a director, Brewton makes some inspired choices that sometimes don’t completely jive when other choices border on expected.

The performances are real discoveries. A cast member mentioned it was the first show one of the actors had ever done (Juliano Delugo) and I couldn’t believe it. He was so grounded and relatable. The ensemble is filled with admirable supporting work, including Brennan Murray as the energized newcomer, Evan Petrino and Austin Buchner as two ‘on again off again’ friends, Jessica DeShaw as the potentially untrustworthy amateur sleuth, and Billy Ray Brewton (whom I did not know acted) as the beleaguered sheriff. But the true revelation was Will Rosen as “Eli”, the character whom all the action revolves. He’s warm, inviting, filled with energy and angst, and makes you truly fall in love with the character.

What I didn't like

There are a few moments that feel a touch too pressed, some of the staging choices seemed basic in comparison to the creativity on display elsewhere, and I could tell there were a couple technical hiccups, though you can’t really hold that against a Fringe show during previews.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – 9/10.

My overall impression

Stylish and deceptively funny take on true crime culture, small town life, and the ways in which groups of people relate to one another under stress. Some inspired staging choices and cast chemistry turned this from a solid and engaging production to my first real highlight of Fringe.
