What I liked

James Byous, James Byous, JAMES BYOUS. What a STAR. But good lord, this whole cast was on FIRE. The vocals were insane and the harmonies were tight. Also huge shout out to director Patrick Mulvey for his deft direction in a tricky space! Truly one of the best musicals playing at the Hollywood Fringe right now.

What I didn't like

I would love to see where the next draft will take this piece. I feel like some of the supporting characters could be fleshed out more, but I have no doubt that will end up happening, because this show has LEGS! I’d also be interested to see what a fully staged production in a proscenium space would look like, however, if there was ever a show to be performed akin to a rock concert, it’s this one!

My overall impression

Oftentimes at Fringe I see musicals written by folks who don’t really know how to do it. This is NOT one of those shows. Jimi Darkness is the textbook definition of a rock musical in the best way, adapting Byous’ concept album for the stage with tunes that won’t leave your head for days. You’ll rock your ass off and cry your eyes out. The cast will melt your face off and you’ll be left wanting more!
