What I liked
Ball Boy is a stand-up comedy special built around some pretty personal material, but the subject matter goes well beyond simple jokes about baseball or family. Ben Fisher explores what it means to grow up as the gay son of a baseball umpire and looks at the expectations people inherit around masculinity, identity and becoming a man. The show also touches on grief, fathers and sons, sport and complicated family history. What makes the premise interesting is the way Fisher connects these experiences with broader social ideas without losing the comedic side of the performance. If you enjoy comedy that mixes personal storytelling with observations about culture and identity, check it out. It sounds like a thoughtful work-in-progress with plenty of room for both humor and more emotional moments.
