David Pavao is incredible onstage. His stage presence, his transitions, his use of costumes/props/tech is all incredible. And the SOUNDTRACK! Filled with the sounds of the ‘70s and just delightful to experience. Pavao guides the audience through the highlights and heartbreak of growing up with a secret, and the angels (fictional and real) who help coax us out of the closet. There’s certainly something to the phenomenon of gay/queer men being drawn to pop stars, divas, and fictional female characters, and by bringing us his perspective, Pavao shines some light at what might be at the root of it. Is it a form of sublimation, a performance of heterosexuality? I don’t think so. It goes much deeper than that, and Pavao invites you to dive in.
What I didn't like
A few beats maybe went on a little long? I’m really reaching here—this show was excellent.
My overall impression
Humorous and heartwarming exploration of growing up gay and the fictional ladies who saved us.
