Mimi Collins wrote and performed a phenomenal show. I was with Alix every single step of the journey. I understood why she stayed with her husband and deeply empathized with her optimism that he could change, which made it all the more devastating after each betrayal. I appreciated each time Alix, a badass modern woman, implied that if she could just satisfy her husband, then he wouldn’t HAVE to cheat as if she was taking subconscious responsibility for his fidelity. It was vulnerable, nuanced moments like this that kept me thinking about the play long after I left the theatre.
The solo show format emphasized how alone Alix felt while keeping this a secret for two years. She expertly jumped between the past and present and talking to invisible scene partners then breaking the fourth wall. Humor was used incredibly well throughout without rescuing the audience from the uncomfortability or tragedy of the situation.
