Technically, this performance was flawless, and helped to create Mimi’s world. Utilizing a spare set, with 3 chairs, a throw blanket and two-sided pillow that creates her “homes,” it is the expertise of this actress (and script) to bring her whole world to life. The use of the cell phone was frighteningly powerful, making the Dom a God-like presence. It fleshed out the tragically barren world of public sex, replacing simple love and connection. There is much humor in her predicament, but also moments of true pathos that this actress brings fearlessly to the audience. She is a remarkable actress.
What I didn't like
The titillation of our character and her ability to find freedom in her own masterful dominance in the online “dom/sub” world is amusing, but ultimately, I wanted to know more about the path to her “release” and longed for more gravitas in this story and journey; at the final blackout I felt there was more to it, and the story seemed to quit on itself. But I must say ‘Bravo’ to Mimi Collins for an entertaining and humanistic take on a perplexing subject.
My overall impression
This one woman show is so well developed that it was like I watched a full cast of characters on stage, not just one actor. Mimi Collins is expert in bringing these other lives to life, interacting and fully realizing her relationships with each. It is about infidelity, male dominance and maneuvering through senseless attachment and an impossible marriage. If it isn’t her husband controlling her life with his countless affairs, it’s a thoughtless couples therapist, and the a “Dom” she meets online, who “directs” her and lets her know when she is a “good girl.”
