What I liked

What an absolute blast! I’m a little new to reading romances and haven’t really ventured away from romantasy yet, but I loved every second of this bombastic and loving send-up of the sensual pages of the most popular romance novel tropes and archetypes.

I’m so impressed on multiple levels. The energetic dynamism of the cast (tossing props, rearranging the stage, choreography, puppet shows), the lively music (the keyboardist accompanying the singers was so fun to watch as well!), Stephanie Bentley’s clever lyrics (I’d share, but they’re too steamy for a review!), and the detailed costumes and props (WINGS?!)…it might be some of the most fun you have all month. The company uses the space so well (I don’t think the Black Box has ever felt that big) and the performances are off the charts. In particular I have to highlight Tristan Turner’s versatile smolders, Alex Ellis’s frantic wide-eyed energy, and Grace Lord’s grumbly highlander gibberish, but every link in this chain is strong and taut.

Oh yeah…and did I mention there are PUPPETS?!

The show is selling out fast so get those tickets!

What I didn't like

Not much! The visual gag of Riley “petting her kitty” was sufficient, and repeating the joke as if we didn’t get it wasn’t necessary. I feel like jokes need to be evolved/transformed if we’re to return to the well multiple times. Luckily, there’s a new, hilarious line basically every time someone opens their mouth.

My overall impression

A horny bookclub…an impossibly beautiful but unlucky-in-love heroine…a best friend whose very existence depends on the presence of said heroine…a hunky schmillionaire with a heart almost as hard as his abs (among other things)…and, uh, puppets?!
