This play’s use of language was extremely exciting. Saving the elevated language monologues for the end was a perfect choice. It was like making us wait for them. Charlie’s nonverbal consent cues were also very impressive. I was a participant at two moments in the show, and for one of them he offered me a flower and gave me a little nod with eye contact. A very clear “take this.” It may seem small, but this communication is a honed skill that he is obviously very versed in. It made me, and it felt like the rest of the audience, feel safe and taken care of, and therefore more open as well.
What I didn't like
I loved the moments where we saw Paris’s toxic masculinity one of the causes of his need for validation from partners and finally his sadness. I think this can be leaned into even more.
My overall impression
I have too many good things to say about this show. Watching Charlie Day perform feels like a once in a lifetime gift. I am so excited to see him in future…anything, because I’m going to seek his performances out forever. Comedy, full commitment, and full open hearted honesty. Thank you for coming to LA, Charlie.
