The show is expertly paced. Charlie opens with broad, outrageous comedy that immediately wins over the audience, then gradually shifts into something more thoughtful and reflective by the end. However, the transition feels completely natural, never veering into the kind of self-important poetry that can alienate an audience. What also stood out to me was the production’s simplicity. With minimal props and costume changes, every choice feels intentional and effective, highlighting not only Day’s talents as a performer and writer, but as a director as well.
What I didn't like
I was hesitant about an 11pm start time – In honesty I was playing the game in my head of “Oh what if I just stay in…” before I left for the theater – But I am so glad I did – I left the play around midnight feeling more refreshed and re-inspired as an artist. There’s nothing I would improve about this show, I LOVED it!
My overall impression
Paris + Juliet is a thoroughly captivating piece of theater, brilliantly carried by Charlie Day from beginning to end. His performance is not only laugh-out-loud funny but also surprisingly lyrical and deeply moving. Day demonstrates a genuine understanding of Shakespeare, balancing the Bard’s wit and heartbreak in a performance that is as thoughtful as it is entertaining. I’d recommend this show to anyone in Los Angeles…a rare chance to experience Shakespeare as intended: with an actual Englishman.
