Punish Me is a taut, psychologically charged work that understands suspense not merely as a matter of plot, but as a condition of emotional entrapment. The play follows a screenwriter in Los Angeles as he falls in love with—and becomes increasingly ensnared by—a malignant narcissist, unfolding with the uneasy momentum of a thriller and the emotional precision of a character study.
What makes the piece so compelling is its restraint. Narcissistic abuse, particularly in its more malignant forms, is easy territory for melodrama. The manipulations, seductions, reversals, and emotional violences could easily have been inflated into caricature. Instead, Punish Me resists the obvious trap. Its portrait of narcissistic pathology is nuanced, clini...

A performance of PUNISH ME with a slightly different cast tonight (6/7/2026) at the Hudson Backstage Theater proved just as sharp and professional as the one I saw in February. It remains a well‑written thriller, penned by Michael Dukakis and performed by him alongside a well‑chosen cast. Beyond being a versatile actor, Dukakis shows himself to be an alert dramatist, filling his authentic scenes with cinematic pacing, tension, and genuine entertainment. I truly recommend it — and I’d absolutely love to see this as a movie too. 👏👏👏👏👏...

Punish Me is an emotionally charged psychological thriller that draws you into the manipulative and destructive world of a toxic relationship. The playwright Michael Dukakis crafts a deeply personal piece, bringing both vulnerability and intensity to the stage. The talented cast delivers a strong, emotionally grounded performance that brings depth and tension to the production. Each actor contributes to the play’s unsettling atmosphere, balancing moments of dark humor, vulnerability, seduction, and suspense. The expert use of lighting and music gives the production a cinematic feel which heightens the psychological suspense. Overall, it was a great production that gives you plenty to think about after the final scene. ...

It was a poignant story about the woes of love. On the quest for true love, Nick meets someone who gradually uproots his entire life. This play showed the true scale of dealing with someone who experiences narcissistic disorder and while the story made me laugh when I needed it most, it also made me walk away with more compassion for anyone in similar situations. Getting out isn’t easy and a strong support system really does change everything. The writing was funny, realistic and I never once looked down at my phone to check the time. That’s a recipe for a great time in my book.
Something else of note and appreciation was the stage design. I love when shows can play with levels and use lighting to help tell the story. The lighting was use...
