I’d never heard the term “folk devil” before this show, but it encapsulates everything at the heart of Lady Satan. The production drives home the absurd and arbitrary nature of demonizing a person or group. In this instance, trans people. And yet the very real danger of that demonization looms over every part of the show. Despite this, there is an undercurrent of joy and playfulness to the production and Peyton Ashby’s performance. One that reminds us to laugh at the heavy stuff whenever we can. Mostly for our own sanity, but also because the fascists f*cking hate it.

My overall impression
Even before the show officially begins, Lady Satan welcomes you into her congregation. And her fabulous, glamorous sermon to her newest flock members boils down to this: “Evil is a choice. But so is hope.”
