alex’s doubling-down on things was inspirational, and at times she made things genuinely uncomfortable, which i really enjoyed. she let moments breathe. peter’s skill with the cello was really nice, and the energy he threw into it elevated the entire experience. his clown work was really great. the grand guignol elements were exactly the right level of grotesque for the story. i liked the message, and thought it built at a good frenetic pace.
What I didn't like
nothing jumps to mind. if something went wrong during our performance (a bow disappeared, but whether that was incredibly well-scripted or a genuine technical hiccup i don’t know) it only added to the enjoyment of the show, so i don’t think that needs to be improved. more themed merchandise would be appreciated. much of big maestro’s unique words for things would translate well to canvas totes, trucker caps, etc., etc.
My overall impression
this was my favorite show i’ve seen at fringe. i found the world very immersive; i found myself nodding along when asked if i had seen these bean videos. i thought the theme had a lot of resonance, and this gave me some tools to better understand my own big maestro, and maybe made life a little easier to bear. i’d go see anything either of these two do in the future, and you should go see this if you can get a ticket.
