I liked how seriously the cast took their relationships to each other. Despite the high-concept setting and the wink at the audience, the ensemble was so deeply committed to their mission as a character that I believed each and every one of them. There were stakes and betrayal, and it was messy. Good writing.
What I didn't like
Just wanted a bit more high school-ness to it all. That’s the real charm. That’s why Big Mouth is so great and that one show they did after… isn’t. It’s fun to see things from the lens of a child, and when it get’s too adulty, it just becomes West Wing with vapes. I think this was right on the edge.
My overall impression
What a fun ride! The turn at the beginning was a great hook, although I do feel as though the play did lose some of the childish innocence which makes this SUCH a hilarious satire around ACT 2. It got a little House of Cards-y minus all the sexy stuff, although plenty was implied. Especially about hands stuff. Overall, I think the ensemble had so much chemistry and Reid Emmons really stood out, playing not one, but two characters with such deep history and richness, all while walking a tightrope of clownery and tomfoolery only a skilled physical actor could pull off with emotional payoff. Bravo.
