The game itself was so compelling, I also felt the departures from truth in the memories that were disrupted further on in the play were such powerful moments that humbly resound with the audience. The lighting cues as signifiers helped these moments along too.
What I didn't like
Add and amplify! The great parts of this play are so great I just wanted to see them drawn out or returned to even more. The big wins in the “game;” maybe utilizing even a bit more the incredible potential of the surreal, twilight zone-esque place apart from space and time this piece creates for itself to exist in
My overall impression
An incredible concept – the unreliability of subjective memory and trauma – the soulful unraveling of a belief that the answer to pain lies in the past, delivered playfully and honestly by Boyle should stick with any audience for days or weeks. How can we give our own past such a playful treatment? Boyle may have the key.
