Schizm is a much needed addition to the Fringe Festival. The production tackles a very important subject matter that needs to be addressed more often.
The execution by writer/director Ryan Lisman could have used more imagination and much more depth. I would have liked to have seen bolder choices in dealing with such a sensitive subject matter. The play runs extra long and could be edited down and still carry the message.
The cast is very dedicated and committed to the piece and they have fun on the stage which expresses nicely. Patty Gliniewicz stands out playing dual parts which are completely different in tone and character. You really can’t take your eyes off of her throughout the play. She is a solid and trained actor.
I also enjoyed Brain Los who played Greg and Myrion Deshon, who has a natural stage presence.
What I didn't like
The play ends on a very low, weak note with the father and son reunion scene. There is no fire, conflict or tension and it could be either cut or made much stronger. The characters playing the voices were a huge distraction and took away from the main story of the 2 lead characters. The voices in Greg’s head would have been much more powerful if they done by recorded audio instead of portrayed by actors.
My overall impression
“Schizm”, a much needed subject matter dealing with mental health.
