Whipped! is a comedic performance, written & performed by reina alejandra prado. Prado takes on the character of a “Good Mexican Girl” personified in Virginia Buenaventura’s journey of self-discovery. Virginia is caught in a time warp of 1950s ideals of domesticity and womanhood. When a new tenant arrives at her boarding house she has to confront her own perceptions of love and sexuality.

The “Good Mexican Girl” character is an earthly personification of Prado’s other character “Santa Perversa.” In Whipped! Virginia Buenaventura’s innocent outlook on love and sex creates a space for women to safely confront their perceptions about desire.
Excerpts of Whipped! have been presented at Highways Performance Space, La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, and Galería de la Raza in San Francisco. Both Pat Payne and Virginia Grise have directed presentations at Highways Performance Space and REDCat. I received support to develop a new excerpt from the UCLA Hothouse Residency in 2010 and the Spring Studio at REDCat in 2011.
