This story represents a theme we see echoed throughout our society where those in power abuse young women who are seeking opportunities to grow their talents. It both educates and resonates in a way only art can. It is also an important example of Asian culture and storytelling that is too often absent from American stages. The portrayal of each character was clear which is so challenging in a solo show and the lighting reflected the emotional trajectory of the story.
What I didn't like
The size of the theater should be larger so more can witness this work.
My overall impression
Junru took us on a journey through her childhood. One that started with innocence, inspiration and joy. She then created awe by demonstrating the rigors of her acrobatic training and precision of her elite balancing skill. But then we are torn apart by the dark side of this journey and the trauma she suffered to achieve the pinnacle of her circus career. And finally she emerges from this finding herself as an artist. This show was a stunning example of combining theater and acrobatics to tell an important story. It should not be missed.
