The play itself is so well structured. It’s 90 minutes with no intermission, but there are two very distinct acts with a scene transition in between, which gives the audience just enough time to process what happened in the first act. I love how the playwright addresses such complex issues with questions rather than answers.
The performances were captivating, I both liked the main characters and felt immensely uncomfortable by them the entire show (I think this works well and supports the central narrative). The tech was really tight, and all of the design elements complemented the performance nicely. I truly loved it!
What I didn't like
I can’t think of anything! I’d love to see where this show goes, and see what else the actors and the creative team discover in the next iteration of the show.
My overall impression
A riveting piece of theatre, Playback dives into topics of consent, controlled narratives, and complicated relationships.
