I liked
- The set; it felt complete, interactive, and perfectly illustrative
- The alternating between realtime and memory performance and the lighting indication to recognize the switch
- The pace
- The flirtation with tragedy and grief, complimented by comedic relief
- Stage movement, responsible and deliberate use of aisle
- So, so much more
What I didn't like
Digging deep, I truly can’t think of one thing that I would change. My letterboxd formula is “if there is nothing I would change about this, it’s a 5” and this sure was a 5.
My overall impression
This performance among many other powerful evocations, was deeply charming & brilliant. The moment Sydney stepped on stage, everything else melted away, leaving only her raw, abiding storytelling & vulnerability. Please Don’t Freak Out is fresh, funny, tragic, warm, and an absolute must-see.
