Rush Zutshi’s directing and blocking were well done and utilized the space very well.
The set design was great.
The chair trick was really well done.
Sashi Poolla’s music and lighting design were great and did great to set the tone that something isn’t right here.
What I didn't like
I struggled with André Cazenave’s and JC Best’s performances. They both felt disconnected and their performances did not feel very grounded.I particularly struggled with Andre’s performance as he has his panic attack and then devolves into insanity. It felt unbelievable and it took me out of the play.
The biggest weakness of the piece for me was Rush Zutshi’s script. I was hooked at the beginning, but the piece takes a 30 minute detour discussing the brother’s daughter and it feels more like a sociology class than a play and ultimately it never quite pays off. The last 20 minute of the piece is where it takes off, however, the back to back reveals felt like they came out of nowhere and unearned. Ultimately, It feels like this piece could’ve been 30 mins and achieve the same impact.
I wish the piece has a stronger “what it was trying to say” with so much of the stage time spent on discussing the teen daughter, the true theme of the piece felt muddled and lost. I think a lot of this could be fixed if rather than speaking about the daughter that earlier conversation focused much more on the mother, her death anniversary, etc, so we could build into discovering what is going on with the lead and leave us wondering if we also saw what he saw or if this is all in his mind. This would feel much more focused instead of a bit disjointed.
My overall impression
An uneven character drama that relies on big turns to shock the audience, but that ultimately feel unearned.
