The writing, acting, themes explored, props, set dressing. Everything really. 10/10
What I didn't like
No notes. Truly. This was excellent and nothing needs to be changed.
My overall impression
An absolute triumph! Hold That Thought While I Scream leaves the audience spellbound with its snappy (yet grounded) dialogue, delicate pacing, mesmerizing performances, and fearless exploration into the psychological effects of modern societal expectations. This character-centered show nods to great playwrights such as Martin McDonagh and Neil Simon, demonstrating how much drama, humor, and truth can be uncovered between two actors in just one location. It cleverly subverts the typical therapist-patient dynamic with the dignified therapist slowly slipping as she wrestles with the voice in her head over her own trauma that she tries so desperately to hide and deny. Her personal conflict combines with bizarre patient interactions to surface varied attitudes toward the modern woman. There’s more I could say, but I’ll leave some room for the script to speak for itself.
And all of this brilliant writing is animated by the immaculate performances of the two actors who captivate the audience with each syllable they speak into the vast ocean of emotion in which they sail. Each line delivered strikes the viewer, whether it be with laughter, solemnity, grief, or hope.
I cannot recommend this show enough. It’s truly remarkable. One can only hope that this company graces the stage again with their talents.
