1. Setting the stage for what we were to hear (The projections, the music, the producer and director)
2. The Change of characters in tone, dress, and style of speech.
3. forcing the audience to sit with their words at a time when america is run by racists competing to hide the brutality of our history.
What I didn't like
The Performance was solid. I wonder if adding projections (& sounds, if possible) from the 20th century as connective tissue during costume changes would enhance the dead space as they did during the pre-show.
My overall impression
With all of the misinformation from “sources” like Fox “news” and Prager “U” it is equally freeing and disturbing to hear the actual words of Douglass, X, & King spoken by their characters. I was tremendously moved and by the end I was also crushed when I realized which MLK Speech I was hearing.
