That’s What You Get is a darkly funny solo show about grief, magical thinking, and the quiet unraveling of a woman inside a doomed marriage.
While packing up the relics of her decade-long relationship with a pro skateboard photographer husband, the records, the decks, the mythology of rebellion, Jackie is pulled back to the moment that split her life in two: a late-term diagnosis, a traumatic stillbirth, and the purple hospital box she cannot throw away.
What was supposed to be “mostly uneventful” became a 36-hour nightmare. What was supposed to be love became something harder to live inside.
Moving between hospital rooms, motel arguments, Vegas weddings, and the long shadow of oppositional cool, Jackie examines the absurdity of grief, the shame of smiling at the wrong moment, and the magical thinking that convinced her she caused her baby’s death. With inappropriate humor and brutal honesty, she interrogates faith, self-blame, sexual power dynamics, and the moment she knew something was wrong — and stayed anyway.
A raw, funny excavation of guilt, marriage, and the stories women tell themselves to survive.
