When you think that you have figured out what the play is about, it throws you a curveball. This was like watching a person slowly descend into madness. How our thoughts can betray us and how burying past traumas will eventually catch up to us. I thought the writing was grounded and not too complex.
What I didn't like
I don’t know if this was written by design, but I thought that the play could have used a happier resolution. I would have liked to see what consequences the main character would have faced for his past transgressions. Also, I wonder if the character holding the cross gave a subtle answer? I would urge the writer to continue to work on this play, and I do not say this disparagingly. He definitely has a masterpiece on his hands.
My overall impression
I thought the entire play was excellent. The writing was thoughtful and nuanced. I thought the subject matter was not too heavy. The main character’s layers are revealed as the play goes on. I thought the movement was well placed. The entire creative team did an incredible job bringing this play to life.
