Veronica Osorio might be the most fearless, zaniest clown out there. (Which is saying something!) Bebé Bebé is a wild fever dream about the most monumental choice a person can make: creating and caring for a human life. Osorio expertly uses clown bits, storytelling, and even some horror elements to give us a glimpse into her mind after giving birth. There aren’t a lot of widely-circulated stories about this major part of a person’s life, and I was grateful for the opportunity to witness it.
Though…I did a little more than witness it! I don’t know if I was in the designated audience participation chair or if Osorio could tell I was down to clown, but I was selected for quite a few audience participation antics! I was terrified, I was thrilled, I feel born again! I’ve been brought onstage for a few clown shows now, but it’s never quite been like this. If you are bold and fun, you’ll have the time of your life!
The best clown shows have something earnest nestled in with the wackiness, and Bebé Bebé is no different. I really loved the closing message of community and connectedness.
What I didn't like
Messaging for the final bit. It’s currently being workshopped, so as a PSA: Fringe moves fast and there’s a good amount of loadout for the show. Lend a hand with cleanup, especially if you’re a man who’s never going to foster life inside you!
My overall impression
An eye-opening, nourishing glimpse into the madness and majesty of postpartum life!
