I found the treatment of the topic to be deeply compassionate. Despite the topic being heavy, there is still humor to be found in the situation. I can only imagine if I found myself in this situation, it would be extremely important for me to still feel human – to be able to find joy and humor in my life. The play does a phenomenal job of bringing about discussion of this topic while reminding the audience that the topic need not be inherently centered in tragedy.
I also really enjoyed the chemistry between the cast. It is clear that they are just as invested in the play as the playwright herself.
What I didn't like
No notes! I’m excited to see how the play evolves over the course of the festival.
My overall impression
Alps, Adieu! is a delightful play about a heavy topic. The play heavily leans into its identity as a dark comedy, and does so in a very enjoyable manner. The entire play takes place in a single location, creating a sense of intimacy between the audience and the actors. The cast blends together wonderfully, and brings the interplay of emotion and humor of the playwright, Jenna Covarrubias, to light. Although this is her first play, it is obvious what a talented writer and director Covarrubias is. Alps, Adieu! is a must see!
